雪梨歌劇院興建規劃始於20世紀1940年代後期，由當時的紐省音樂學院主任尤金吉信 (Eugene Goossens)所動議, 原意想在雪梨物色一個較太的音樂廳, 這個計劃後來獲得當時的紐省省長約瑟夫·卡希爾(Joseph Cahill) 的支持及撥款, 約瑟夫.卡希爾(Joseph Cahill) 原本希望雪梨歌劇院要在Wynyard 火車站或靠近的地黠, 但吉信(Eugene Goossens)堅決要在硯時的地址興建 (Bennelong Point, Sydney).

建築設計微求正競爭始已於1955年9月13日, 代表來自32個國家的建築師, 共有收到233 個設計, 最後勝利者由丹麥建築師喬恩伍重(Jorn Utzon) 所獲得.

雪梨歌劇院於1959年3月開始動工, 並於於1973年正式落成，建築費緦共耗資1.02億美元, 歌劇院比原來計劃完成遲了10年(原來計劃是在 1963完成) , 並且超過14次的超資預算 (原來的預算是7 百萬)  。

1973年10月20日一大群人出席了會議, 歌劇院開幕典禮由伊麗莎白二世女王主持, 並以貝多芬的第九號交響曲作開幕音樂。奇怪的是喬恩伍重先生(Jorn Utzon) 當時並沒有被邀請參加典禮，典禮內容也沒有提及他的名字。

在2003年喬恩伍重先生(Jorn Utzon) 的歌劇院設計獲得 Pritzker Prize 大獎, 這是建築學上最高的榮譽, 無可否認, 雪梨歌劇院是世上一個頂級的建築傑作, 也是地球上一個獨一無2的標誌, 對我來說, 雪梨歌劇院更本是一個偉大的藝術作品.

雪梨歌劇院最大的演奏廳 Concert Hall 可容納2679座椅, Opera Theatre有1500座椅, The Drama theatre有544座椅…等. 除了有多個的演奏廳, 雪梨歌劇院內還有銢音室, 餐館, 咖啡室等, 每年約有120萬人到訪
